What Are The Hearts and Arrows Diamonds?

The thing about finished diamonds is that they look worlds apart from the state in which they were

extracted or mined. There is a lot of work that goes into creating the most perfect diamond and making

this work goes into giving the best cut to the diamond. This ‘cut’ is defined as the way a particular

diamond is shaped so as to let more light enter inside the diamond, causing more internal reflections

and making the diamond look much more beautiful. 

Cuts basically represent the facets that are shaped into the crown (top), pavilion (bottom), and the girdle (middle)

of the diamond in order to give it a shape and let light enter at specific angles. As an overall effect of this

What are the Heart and Arrows Diamond?

The traditional round brilliant cut diamonds have 57 facets (faces) in total that are all cut to an ideal

proportion irrespective of the size of the diamond. These facets are created with a near-perfect optical

symmetry, surface finish and a pattern. This round brilliant cut diamond is what we normally picture

in our heads when we imagine a diamond.

In the 80s, as per the leading diamond distributor in hong kong, the Japanese discovered the three

factors that made brilliant-cut diamonds the embodiment of perfection as they are known today. 

They discovered that-

-When a diamond is cut to ideal proportions as described by Marcel Tolkowsky in his 1919 book, Diamond Design,

-When a diamond was cut with perfect physical and optical symmetry, and

-When the diamond was cut to a specific brilliantine orientation,

It will develop a particular pattern that came to be known as the hearts and arrows (H&A) diamond.

When a person looked at a diamond like this from the top, he/she will see 8 symmetrical arrows, and

when viewed from the bottom, he/she will see 8 symmetrical hearts. While the prospect of diamonds like

these existing way before the 80s is true, the Japanese can be credited with bringing the H&A diamonds

to the world, in a manner.

What Does This Mean?

H&A Diamonds, in no manner, are any different than other diamonds. They do not cause a diamond to be brilliant. However, cutting a diamond close to brilliant proportions is what causes these hearts and diamonds to appear. It can be called an effect instead of a characteristic or unique property of diamond. A number of diamond producers around the world are developing non-conventional cuts in diamonds to produce the same effect in their pieces and charging extra for the same because the buyer will not find it anywhere else (Proprietary methods).

Instead of getting diamonds that are marketed for the purpose of hyping and hiking the costs, go for normal brilliant-cut diamonds as they have the same characteristics.
