Fluorescence is the radiance of colour that a diamond shows when exposed to ultraviolet rays. There are many myths associated with the presence of fluorescence in a diamond that makes it unpopular. Let us debunk some common myths about fluorescence and show you its beauty.  




Myth 1 - Fluorescence Harms Brilliance

It is a myth that fluorescence diminishes the brilliance of a diamond. If you are a wholesale designer jewellery supplier, you know that the brilliance of a diamond depends on its cut, proportion, facets, and angles. These influence refraction, dispersion, and reflection of light, which decides the intensity of diamond radiance.

Fluorescence simply adds colour to a diamond and has no effect on how it glitters.

 
Myth 2 - Fluorescence Hampers Durability

The durability of a diamond depends on its hardness, stability, and toughness. Hardness is the resistance of diamond towards scratches. Stability is the reaction of a diamond towards environmental and chemical changes. Toughness relates to resisting chipping and breaking. Fluorescence has no effect on these and therefore, does not affect durability and structure of a diamond.

 
Myth 3 - Fluorescence is of Blue Colour Only

Diamond fluorescence is not restricted to blue colour. Almost 30% of colourless diamonds have fluorescence. The common glow of fluorescence in colourless diamonds is blue. Nevertheless, they can also shine in yellow, green, pink, orange, and red colours.

Red is the rarest colour of fluorescence, which makes a diamond highly-priced. Natural colour diamonds have low-to-high fluorescence of same or different colour.

 
Myth 4 – Fluorescence Ruins Appearance of Diamond

Affect of fluorescence on the colour of a diamond depends on the colour grade of a diamond. Presence of blue fluorescence in I-M colour grade diamonds reduces the appearance of yellowish colour under UV light and sunlight, making it look colourless.

Blue fluorescence in D-H colour grade diamonds may reflect a tint of blue colour under UV light and also make them appear oily or hazy.

Myth 5 – Fluorescence is Bad

Diamond fluorescence is a feature of diamond and not property. It does not affect the structure of a diamond and is irrelevant to the 4 Cs of a diamond. Fluorescence is not a deciding factor to the quality of a diamond. The quality of a diamond is decided on 4 C's and fluorescence is out of the purview of such valuation.

Fluorescence is not bad or good as it is a feature that has nil effect on the properties of a diamond.

 Fluorescence is simply an attribute of a diamond that makes every diamond distinct from each other, which many find fascinating.
