How are diamonds created?
Diamonds are created when carbon is subjected to both pressure and heat; they are formed at 500km below the Earth’s crust. The rarest and most precious diamonds are large in size, with remarkable color and clarity.
1. THE KOH-I-NOOR
Number 1 on KGK Group’s list of the most expensive and precious diamonds in the world is the Koh-I-Noor.
Weight: 105.6 Carat
Shape: Oval shaped.
Price: Unknown
History: Drenched in history, the stone have been mined in India in the 1300s.
Kohinoor has a controversy attached with it, Britain while ruling India, took it from India and the expert says that it rightfully belongs to India. Britain acquired the stone in 1850 and in 1852, Prince Albert had it cut from 186ct to 105.6ct to increase its brilliance and sparkle. It is also known as Mountain of Light and the Diamond of Babur.
2. THE CULLINAN
No. 2 on our list is “The Cullinan”; it is the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found.
Weight: 530 carat
Price: Upto $2 Billion
Discovery: It was discovered in Cullinan, South Africa in 1905.
History: It was then gifted to King Edward VII.
The rough diamond weighing an incredible 3,106.75 carats , also known as the Star of Africa, was cut into 9 main stones, the largest of which is the 530.2ct Cullinan I.
3. THE HOPE DIAMOND
Weight: 45.52 Carat
Price: $200-$250 MILLION
Color: Dark Gray-Blue
Shape: cushion cut
Discovery: Believed to have been discovered in India in the 1600s, according to a precious diamond supplier, it was bought by King Louis XIV in 1668.
History: It was stolen during a crown jewel looting in 1791 but resurfaced in London in 1839. In 1949, Harry Winston purchased this diamond and donated it to the Smithsonian Institution. The Hope Diamond is said to be cursed due to the misfortune that many of its previous owners experienced.
4. THE CENTENARY DIAMOND
Weight: 273.85 Carat
Price: $100 MILLION
Shape: Heart Shaped
History:As a rough diamond, the Centenary Diamond weighed over 500ct. It was later cut to improve its color (D) and clarity grade (flawless). It took a total of 154 days for their highly-skilled team to finish the cutting process.
5. THE PINK STAR
Weight: 59.60 Carat
Price: $71.2 MILLION
Shape: Heart Shaped
Color: It is the largest diamond to have been graded a Fancy Vivid Pink.
Discovery: Mined in South Africa in 1999, it was previously known as the Steinmetz Pink. Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, bought the Pink Star from Sotheby’s auction in 2017 in a telephonic bid.
6. THE WINSTON BLUE
Weight: 13.22 carat
Price: $23.8 MILLION
Shape: This pear shaped diamond is internally flawless.
Color: Vivid Blue
Discovery: Originally called the Fancy Diamond, this stone was renamed “The Winston Blue” after Harry Winston purchased it in 2014.
Record: It set a new world record for the price per carat of a blue diamond.
7. THE WITTELSBACH DIAMOND
Weight: 31.06 carat
Price: $23.4 MILLION
Color: Fancy deep blue
History: The Wittelsback Diamond made history having been passed from one European member of royalty to another. It is internally flawless diamond and has belonged to both Spanish and German royalty since it arrived in Europe in the 1600s.
At a whopping 35.56ct until 2010 when it was recut to 31.06ct, The highly controversial recut in 2010 triggered backlash among the gemology community but did improve the color and the clarity.
8. THE PERFECT PINK
Weight: 14.23 carat
Price: $23.2 MILLION
Color: Intense Pink
Cut: Emerald Cut
History: In 2010, Christie’s sold The Perfect Pink to an unknown bidder. According to B2B Diamond Suppliers its size and intensity of pink makes it rare.
9. THE HEART OF ETERNITY — $16 MILLION
Weight: The rough diamond from which it was cut down was roughly 777 carat
Price: $16 MILLION
Color: Vivid Blue
Cut: Heart Shape
History: The original owner of The Heart of Eternity was the Steinmetz Group, De Beers later bought it in 2000 and if we believe on the rumors in 2012 boxer Floyd Mayweather purchased the diamond for then-fiancée, Shantel Jackson.
Blue diamonds represent only 1% of all mined fancy colored diamonds and KGK Diamond has the few best blue diamonds.
10. THE MOUSSAIEFF RED DIAMOND — UP TO $8 MILLION
Weight: 5.11 Carat
Price: $8 MILLION
Color: Fancy Red
Cut: Trilliant cut
History: Discovered in Brazil in the 1990’s, it is currently the largest natural-colored fancy red diamond graded by the GIA.
